Opening Day is May 5th!

March 29, 2019 |  by  |  News  |  No Comments

Montavilla Farmers Market opens for the 2019 season on Sunday, May 5th! Shoppers will find locally-grown and locally-made food and farm products from 50 farmers and food producers. We’re excited to see many favorite long-time vendors once again and can’t wait to introduce you to some new ones too! On opening day, farmers will have a harvest of everything from arugula to sugar snap peas, plus we’ll see mushrooms, beans & grains, meats, eggs, and honey. Prepared food vendors will be tempting shoppers with baked goods, jam, kombucha, hummus, and other specialty foods. And don’t forget the plant starts and bouquets of spring tulips!

2019 launches Nutritious & Delicious — a new monthly event of lectures, recipes, handouts, and cooking demos with food samples, led by nutritionists with a focus on the healing properties of market foods to support specific health conditions or stages of life. We’re also bringing back our popular Taste of the Market days every third Sunday of the month, where shoppers will have the chance to taste the seasons by sampling different varieties of fruits or vegetables right in the height of their production. Regular kids activities, music, and more surprises will round out what’s in store throughout the season. Be sure to sign up for our e-newsletter or follow us online to make sure you don’t miss a minute of the action.

Best news of all is that our Everybody Eats SNAP/EBT match is back! Spend your EBT funds at the market and you’ll get a match of up to $10 a day in bonus tokens – FREE – that you can spend at the market on SNAP eligible foods.

Sound fun? Want more? Join us in helping make the market go! Every year over 50 volunteers regularly pitch in at all levels to share in the effort that brings this community resource to life each week. From taking just a few minutes to do a crowd count, to sitting on the board of directors, there’s a task that’s perfect for your skills and time commitment. Volunteering is great way to make new friends in the neighborhood, learn more about our region’s food systems, and be part of something big. Now’s the perfect time to get involved!

Montavilla Farmers Market runs weekly on Sundays from May through October. Winter markets happen on the 4th Sunday of the month November through February. All markets are open from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. The market is located in the gravel lot with the red barn at 7700 SE Stark St., Portland, OR 97215.

Sow Radical Seeds

Sow Radical Seeds

October 22, 2018 |  by  |  News  |  No Comments

Have you seen Montavilla’s newest mural yet? It graces the farmers market lot and its message, Sow Radical Seeds, was chosen and painted by an all-women-team of artists:
Girl Mobb
– Portland’s own N.O. Bonzo

It depicts two strong women, sowing the seeds of radical community-driven change, nurturing a more sustainable world where communities have food security, food sovereignty, and equitable access to healthy nutritious foods. The mural came into existence thanks to efforts by the Montavilla Neighborhood Association and the Portland Street Art Alliance. Together with the Montavilla Farmers Market, they’ll be officially introducing the mural to the neighborhood Monday night, Oct. 22nd at 6:30 PM at Bipartisan Cafe.

Come learn more about the artists and the women-centered imagery they use in their work, the community partnership that produced the mural, as well as hear from two of the market’s farmers: Javier Lara of Anahuac Produce and Lily Matlock of Lil’ Starts. It’s an opportunity meet the people who are sowing radical seeds in Montavilla, and soak up some inspiration for your own community good works!

A fundraiser is underway to pay the artists. Any amount of gift, as generous as you’re able, will show your support for their time and creativity. Please make your donation today!

Summer Flavors of June!

June 5, 2018 |  by  |  News  |  No Comments

The beginning of June brings early summer flavors to the Montavilla Farmers Market! Yolkan Farm (formerly Amaro’s Produce ) will have first-of-the-season Mt. Hood strawberries along with fresh basil, cilantro, and young spring onions. Their spring onions have a sweetness when lightly caramelized on the grill that make them the perfect side to any summer dish. Be sure to stop by Simplicity Gardens and Denison Farms shared stall for some of their new potatoes and fresh green fava beans, and the first of the season’s tomatoes.

Cool off at the market with Aviv’s ice cream. Their creamy ice cream is made with coconut milk as a base,  making it  vegan and non-dairy! For an unconventional flavor try their hatch-chile ice cream. Hatch chilis are scattered throughout the vanilla ice cream base, which starts sweet and ends with a spicy kick!

The distiller at market for June 3rd is Stone Barn Brandyworks. Sample their Cranberry Liqueur. It is delicious, and dangerously drinkable!

Maryhill Fruit Co. is bringing their cherries, apricots, and pluots.

Crooked Furrow Farm out of Corvallis will be at the market with fresh produce and eggs!

Good Moon brings their adzuki bean moon cakes. These are one of highest selling items at Elephants Deli on Corbett! The adzuki bean has been called Jewel of the East, because it is so rich in antioxidants.

T Bee S continues the sweetness over at their booth with a wide range of local honey products all from their 500 hives! Stop by to see them for propolis, royal jelly, pollen, and CBD honey products.

New vendors starting this month are: Dancing Kitchen — featuring delicious, gluten-free baked goods. One Stripe Chai — your source for spicy chai concentrates. Albeke Farms and Liepold Farms— for berries galore!

End your trip to the market with a visit to Mixteca. They hand-press the blue corn tortillas that hold their delicious chicken mole tacos!

Stop by and see Erika at her face painting table. She can transform your little one into a tiger, kitty, flower garden, or Spider-Man! She will be there from 10:30a – 1:30p, making your trip a memorable event for your children! We’ll also be hearing from several of Montavilla’s own musicians playing every week in June.

With over 40 dahlia varieties, this vendor has every color and shape a gardener could dream of. The highlight of their varieties this year is a beautiful yellow dahlia with white tips, a hard to find variety in most stores.
