Loaner Bags

Montavilla Farmers Market / Loaner Bag Program

Upcycled and repurposed just for you.

To further our commitment to replacing waste with reusability, the Montavilla Farmers Market launched the Market Loaner Bag program in 2010. With the help of our shoppers, we’re hoping to put an end to the “use-it-once” mentality by providing market bags to borrow if you’ve forgotten yours. The bags have been made from t-shirts that have been donated by the Market community and cleverly sewn by volunteers, including neighborhood home sewers and boutique Union Rose. The jersey t-shirt fabric produces a bag that is soft and a little bit stretchy, which hugs your purchases nicely.

We were also lucky enough to have numerous reusable bags donated by Saints Peter and Paul Episcopal Church and Fix Auto Portland East to help support this program.

Borrow A Bag

The Market will have these unique bags on hand at the Info Booth, based on availability,  for market shoppers to borrow and fill with produce & other market goods. The bags may be borrowed for the week and should be returned the next time you visit market, hopefully the following Sunday. Returning them promptly will ensure their availability at market for the season duration. Our handy and free Produce Storage Guide will teach you how to safely store your farmers market produce once you get it home, reducing the need for disposable plastic bags.

Get Crafty

We can always use more loaner bags, so if you’re feeling crafty, help us to make some more! Here’s a site with some easy instructions on how to do it. Donations of loaner bags are always welcome at the Information Booth.
